The Science Committee at the LBIF focuses its efforts on educating the community about the need to preserve and protect the ecology of LBI.  Co-chairs Rick Bushnell and Angela Andersen. Founders John and Nancy Petralia.

One of the major challenges and opportunities on LBI is to improve the condition of the bay and all the creatures that live in it. In an effort to make a positive impact on the ecosystem, the Science Committee is spearheading a campaign to educate visitors and residents of Long Beach Island on what they can do to help Save Our Bay.

The fact is that the bay is in trouble. The oyster population is virtually gone. The clam population is down 80% in the past 5 years. Eel grass, the favored habitat for shellfish, is losing out to algae. Increased turbidity is impacting photosynthesis. Fish levels are way off. What can be done?

As discussed in The Island Blue Pages, there are many things we all can do.
